Sylvania's History

The area that is now occupied by the city of Sylvania was originally swampland. However, it was swampland full of valuable wood and other resources, and Ohio and Michigan both wanted to claim it. Ohio eventually was awarded control of the area, and Sylvania was founded by General David White in 1832. In 1836, Judge William Wilson officially recognized the town of Sylvania, although a dispute between Wilson and White over the name almost resulted in the town being named Whiteford.
