Maumee's HistoryThe Maumee area was originaly settled by the Ottawa tribe. However, during the 18th century, American, British, and French forces battled over the area. In 1794, the American forces won a decisive victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, giving them control of the area. The town was founded in 1817, and Maumee was later selected as the county seat in 1840. However, the city's booming expansion slowed dramatically when the railroad made the nearby canal less useful.
