Ypsilanti's History
Ypsilanti began as a trading post established by the French-Canadian fur trader Gabriel Godfroy in 1809. In 1823, a permanent settlement was established near the Huron River by Major Thomas Woodruff. Later, this settlement became known as Woodruff's Grove. In 1829, Woodruff's Grove and a new settlement merged and became Ypsilanti. The city was named after Demetrius Ypsilanti, one of the heroes of the Greek War of Independence.
