Toledo's History
The first settlers in the Toledo area arrived in 1794, shortly after the Battle of Fallen Timbers. They settled near Fort Industry, but by 1812, many left the area due to the War of 1812. However, thanks to the construction of several canals during the 1820s and 30s, many small towns popped along the Maumee River. Two of these towns, Port Lawrence and Vistula, merged in 1833 and took the name Toledo after the city in Spain. The city expanded slowly at first, but thanks to the railroads and industrial booms, it soon became one of the largest cities in Ohio.
