Oregon's History
The area that became Oregon, OH, was originally part of the Great Black Swamp. The area was originally settled because of the many different trees that grew there. The first settlers were lumberjacks, and many sawmills were established in what eventually became Oregon. Oregon Township itself was founded in 1838 and named by Pierre Irving, nephew of author Washington Irving. Later, a port on Lake Erie and the railroad helped Oregon's economy.
