Ann Arbor's History

The city of Ann Arbor was founded in 1824. No one is certain where the name came from, but one popular theory is that it was named after the spouses of the city's two founders. The city's population exploded in 1837 when the University of Michigan moved to Ann Arbor from Detroit. It then grew steadily for years until the Depression of 1873. During the 1960s, the city became known for being a center of left-wing politics, and a number of demonstrations took place in Ann Arbor during the civil rights movement and the anti-Vietnam War movement.
